The medications used to treat these conditions have a side effect of causing dry mouth (xerostomia). Saliva reduces 90% of the plaque that forms on the teeth. If saliva is reduced, more plaque and bacteria are present to attack the teeth. This ultimately results in more cavities, tooth loss, and extensive dental treatment. Proper dental preventive measures need to be employed as well as possibly saliva substitutes to help reduce the destructive effects of xerostomia to the mouth.
